Semifinalists are dream pop tycoons whose self-titled debut album begins with barbershop a capella harmonies before thumping drums, atmospheric synths and jangly guitars build the song up, back down and then up again into a different tune. It's this experimentism and sense of dynamics and harmonics that really mark Semifinalists as a really big new band, although they aren't yet massively popular. They're big, as in epic, and as close to a fresh 2006 version of Mercury Rev or (mid-era) Flaming Lips as we've got. Or maybe we've just got a more uptempo and condensed Secret Machines, with a girl. Either way, it'll be anthems like You Said, Show The Way and The Chemicals That Wait that transforms them from 3 film school students of different nationalities who produced a record, into sculptors of beauty that needs to be protected like they are some sort of culturally-important castle.
