If Born Ruffians weren't from Canada; they'd be called The Ruffians, they'd be based in London, they'd be on the cover of NME and they'd sing about England. But geography has granted us one of the most exciting new bands in town. Jerky guitars and manic drums leave absolutely no space for contemplation or a breath of air, whilst Luke LaLonde yelps out an almost inaudible list of his goals. Fortunately, he has no time to achieve any of them as he's too busy writing (or entirely improvising - I can't tell!) songs like the breakneck This Sentence Will Ruin/Save Your Life.

Grizzly Bear clearly went to a whole lot of trouble to write, arrange and record the incredible and sprawling Knife. So it's fun to hear a bunch of teens completely tear apart its epicness with a raw guitar sound and heaps of enthusiasm.

Bishop Allen - undisputably the best band of 2006 - have gotten themselves involved in a song contest on Salon.com. If you think one of the other four finalists are more deserving of a Christmas bonus, vote for them, but trust me - they aren't!
